Meet The Conductor – Linus Ip
Philadelphia Sinfonia is delighted to welcome Linus Ip as our new Music Director and Conductor! Linus is already recognized as one of the most promising young conductors of his generation, admired for his innovative programming, cultural collaborations, and passion for making music accessible and meaningful to all audiences.
For Linus, the spark to become a conductor goes back to his very first experience on the podium. “My favorite memory will always be my very first time conducting an orchestra,” he recalls. “I remember the thrill of giving a downbeat and hearing the entire ensemble respond. It was like stepping into a new world—it was magical. And from that moment I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life.” That sense of wonder continues to guide him in every rehearsal and performance.
Linus’s personal journey has also shaped the way he approaches music. Having moved from another continent seven years ago, he knows the importance of belonging and connection. “To me, music should be for everyone,” he explains. “I try to program works that highlight voices outside the traditional canon—immigrant stories, women composers, and new music that speaks to our world today.” His vision for Philadelphia Sinfonia is one of inclusivity, ensuring that the music on stage reflects the diversity and creativity of the world we live in.
Alongside this artistic vision, Linus brings a deep commitment to mentorship. “One of the hardest parts of being a musician is that every artist’s journey is different, and unlike other professions, there’s no single roadmap to follow,” he says. “That makes life in music both exciting and, at times, very difficult to navigate. So part of me as a conductor is not only shaping sound but also creating an environment where musicians feel safe, respected, and encouraged to grow.” He hopes to help young musicians discover their own voices while experiencing the joy and challenge of playing great music together.
Outside of the concert hall, Linus enjoys cooking and painting—two passions he says feel closely connected to conducting. “I love the process of creation, whether it’s bringing flavors together in the kitchen or blending colors on a canvas,” he says. “In many ways, they feel similar to conducting.” This creative energy shines through in the way he rehearses, inspires musicians, and designs concert programs that blend tradition with fresh perspectives.
Linus’s recent work includes guest conducting the Symphoniker Hamburg in Germany, serving as Assistant Conductor of the Orion Youth Symphony, and working as Cover and Assistant Conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute at the Kennedy Center. He has collaborated with Marin Alsop, led premieres of new works, and been recognized internationally for his artistry and leadership.
As Philadelphia Sinfonia embarks on a new season, we are excited to begin this next chapter under Linus’s direction. His passion, creativity, and dedication to young musicians promise to make this year one of growth, inspiration, and unforgettable music. Welcome, Linus!
