Meet The Conductor – Danielle Garrett
Philadelphia Sinfonia is thrilled to shine the spotlight on one of our dynamic conductors, Maestra Danielle Garrett, who leads both Philadelphia Sinfonia Players (PSP) and Philadelphia Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra (PSCO). Known for her vibrant energy and unwavering dedication to her students, Ms. Garrett inspires young musicians to reach new heights every week.
Ms. Garrett’s musical journey began as a violinist, but it was her first experience on the podium that sparked a lifelong passion for conducting. “I was intrigued by the art of conducting and creating a beautifully unified sound with an ensemble,” she shares. Today, she brings that same curiosity and commitment to every rehearsal, helping her students grow into confident, expressive musicians.
When asked about her favorite music, Ms. Garrett points to the works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. “He writes memorable melodies and colorful orchestrations,” she says, qualities that clearly resonate with her own expressive approach to music-making.
Outside the concert hall, Ms. Garrett’s life is just as full. She loves spending time with her 21-month-old son, Jayden, and admits to a long-running game of Candy Crush, currently at level 6,100! In a surprising twist, she also holds a first-degree black belt in Mixed Martial Arts, after ten years of training and competition.
As both a female conductor and woman of color, Ms. Garrett takes pride in being a role model for her students. “I’m passionate about helping young musicians find their voice in the orchestra,” she says. Watching their growth and excitement on stage is what drives her most.
If she weren’t conducting? Ms. Garrett might have been an aerospace engineer, but lucky for us, her heart led her to music, and to Philadelphia Sinfonia! We are so fortunate to have her leadership and look forward to a fantastic season of growth and beautiful music together.
